Table Tennis

I got interested in “serious” table tennis in my teens, then re-discovered the sport decades later. It’s a great sport for all ages, and a lot of fun!

Ping Pong, or Table Tennis?

There was a time when enthusiasts were adamant about referring to our sport (which has been in the Summer Olympics since 1988) as table tennis, to distinguish it from the more recreational “ping pong” you might play in your garage or basement. But these days, either one is fine. Just note that, like badminton and a few other sports, it is quite a different experience when played at a high level, compared to the casual parlor game.

World Class

China has many of the best players in the world, having dominated the Olympics and world competitions for decades. Players like Ma Long (pictured), Fan Zhendong, and Liang Jingkun currently top the world rankings. But Europe has some legendary players like Timo Boll, Dimitrij Ovtcharov, and Truls Moregard, while Hugo Calderano (Brazil), Tomokazu Harimoto (Japan), and Quadri Aruna (Nigeria) are among the top players from other nations.

The U.S. has not had much success on the world stage, but our current champion, Kanak Jha, is climbing the world rankings, and making a mark.
